About Us
Mmofra means “children” in Akan, one of Ghana’s widely spoken languages.
Active since 1997, Mmofra Foundation is a registered non-profit organization based in Ghana. We are dedicated to enriching the cultural and intellectual lives of all children in Ghana. We achieve this by supporting creative work which benefits children and ensuring that it has the widest possible impact.
At Mmofra, we have used informal, outdoor space for our programs for many years. With the help of an international network of architects, planners, engineers, educators, artists and artisans, we’ve formed teams to experiment with new ideas for African play spaces and concepts of playful learning. Our projects are overseen by Executive Director Esi Sutherland-Addy, International Representative Amowi Phillips, and a 5-member board.
We are advocates for open space in the built environment for children, as well as child-centered design of outdoor and indoor spaces – and we believe the need for them is even more pressing as the youthful population in Ghana, and the African continent as a whole, continues to urbanize.
Backed by our years of experience as practitioners in African contexts, we are able to provide space and programming consultancy services to projects globally.
Our Story
Mmofra Foundation was started by Efua T. Sutherland
As a young educator and writer in the late 1950’s, Efua Sutherland was a pioneer in creating institutions to support literature and theater in her home country, Ghana.
She was particularly interested in developing programs to ground children in their local cultures, and as the head of Ghana’s National Commission on Children she created a “Children’s Park and Library” concept for the country which was a first in Africa.
She saw Mmofra Foundation as a vehicle for putting her many visionary ideas for championing children into practice when she retired from public service. Although she passed away before she could fully bring this into being, the Foundation is one of her important legacies. Through the Sutherland family and a host of well-wishers, Mmofra Foundation continues to realize many aspects of her vision.
